Tougher than sectoids, more disciplined than mutons, faster than andromedons. Hobgoblins are a product of a long-forgotten necromancer on the eastern fringe abducting stone-age beings from... somewhere, putting them into gestation pods, and making them into soldiers for his armies against the eldarin because the three aforementioned just couldn't get the job done. After the necromancer was defeated, the newly-created hobgoblins settled down on the various worlds they did conquer and forgot their origins.
The worlds hobgoblins live on are rich in syrneth ruins and artifacts. This led them to worship the syrneth for a time and they still hold a deep reverence for them. They tend to worship Bahamut, attracted to his hierarchical yet benevolent outlook on the world. Hobgoblin culture values martial skill to the extent that even getting a cut in battle is a deep shame.

Ogdoad Librarian (Hobgoblin, others)
You have studied the tablets left by the Syrneth to such an extent that you can actually make heads or tails of them. You can speak, read, understand, and write in the Syrneth language.
Phalanx Soldier (Hobgoblin)
Your shield is your life. As is your ally's. When wielding a shield (the weapon type, not the specific weapon), increase your static defense by your dots in weaponry. When adjacent to allies, the armored property of your shield applies to them and vice-versa.
Shipmaster (Hobgoblin)
Commanding a ship is more than just barking orders. It's barking orders at people who understand barking. All ships you serve as captain (or at least commanding officer) on have the benefits of a destiny knot. If it already had one, the ship (just the ship) gains an extra hero point that you can use while you command it.
Tactical Mind (Hobgoblin)
Your might gave you command. Your knowledge lets you keep it. You may add your intelligence as a static bonus to command and academic lore tests.

The true devotee honors your name with actions, not words. Gain one dot in weaponry. You may increase your racial characteristics and skills (and weaponry) at any time as though they were in your class track.
Physical Qualities
Hobgoblins look little like the creatures that form two thirds of their name. Their right brain is less developed than their left brain on average. A hobgoblin isn't as capable of conceptualization as your average human, but this is as much a function of their society as it is their physiology - a hobgoblin that studies can be as well-read as a human or eldarin, though they might have to work a bit harder at it.
Hobgoblins were created by altering existing life forms. They usually have hoof-like feet and some have four-hinged mouths, but all of them have sharp teeth. Their skin color is usually gray-to-blue, but red, purple, yellow, or other colors are not unheard of.
Playing a Hobgoblin
A hobgoblin is a meritocratic entity. Their ideas of merit are skewed but they follow through. For example: hobgoblin soldiers are promoted purely by kill count and not, say, ability to command. This rewards martial prowess and they are popular mercenaries as a result. While not admired, hobgoblins tend to be respected.
Hobgoblins aren't a warlike race, though they are militaristic. Their lives are regimented and all citizens of a hobgoblin government are either in the militia or the military itself. This is out of a desire to ensure everyone can come to the defense of their society when so needed. People compare them to orks but they're only half right. Orks are violent rabble. Hobgoblins are disciplined soldiers.
Hobgoblin Heroes
Rodrik 'Kingsylee is a rich fashion designer with a criminal side-gig. After one too many shadowrunners got the best of him he decided to give himself more power. He made a deal with a dragon, stole a bunch of stuff from a colleague, and has since become an enemy of The Amazing Arachne-Man.
Thel ‘Vadamee served as arbiter to a coalition of keeps during the Doisac war. For ten years ‘Vadamee campaigned with gue'vesa against the orks to get revenge for their expulsion from the tau empire and recover his wife. The gods played cosmic politics with this war. Bahamut favored the orks until one day he relented for reasons unknown.
Oglah 'Khan is a mischievous hobgoblin. He serves as a mercenary for a fairy paradigm and created a comedy of errors during a campaign that led to him giving a man a donkey's head (don't ask). You know when he’s coming by the unnatural plague that precedes him.
