It cannot communicate with beings other than you, and you can perceive through its senses as well as your own. You can have only one Doppelman summoned at a time, and it dissipates if it is more than 50m away from you.
If you are a Darkspawn, your shadow looks identical to you, is capable of speaking to others using your voice, and may be used as the origin point for your spells. Additionally, a Darkspawn can choose to assign damage taken by himself to the Doppelman once per scene.
